This session is designed to show librarians how tap into the abundance of opportunities they have to make money… not excuses. It will describe successful concepts from the world of broadcasting that can be used by libraries to establish value, find prospects, coordinate activities and build ongoing relationships with the business community. . Naming rights and sponsorships, co-op money, and most importantly, establishing value will be covered. How to convert library statistics into cost-per-thousand figures to pitch advertising Pro’s and other media methods will be presented in the context of library collections, programming, and services.

Speaker Biography

Ed Rossman: 

Edmund A. Rossman III has been involved with libraries and broadcasting since 1980.  Now retired after successfully battling cancer, he was an Adult Service Librarian in Shaker Heights, Ohio and chair of the Business Reference in Public Libraries Committee of BRASS. His book Castles Against Ignorance: How to Make Libraries Great Educational Environments is in over 70 libraries and consortia throughout the world. He has taught courses on the internet and mass media for the Kent State School of Journalism and is has taught online courses on Business Writing for libraries at Kent State. He’s conducted several eCourses for ALA Edition on fundraising based on his 2nd book, 40+ New Revenue Sources for Libraries and Nonprofits, available in over 500 libraries.  As a business manager of radio stations in two major markets, he coordinated dozens of sponsorship campaigns, as well as produced over 200 hours of sponsored, specialty programming. His third book, released during COVID, details his cancer journey with the goal of helping others, A Guy’s Guide to Throat Cancer: Do’s and Don’ts for Recovery.
